The Little School That Dared to Dream
With fewer than 100 students, SJK(C) Hwa Lian 1 on Pangkor Island was never expected to dominate a national stage. Established in early 2023, its 24 Festive Drums troupe began with almost nothing. Rattan sticks became drumsticks. Plastic buckets became training drums. Six donated drums gradually became 12, then finally a full set of 24. Nearly a quarter of the school's students joined the troupe, while alumni coaches travelled across the sea to train them. Teachers, parents and islanders rallied behind the young drummers, turning a lack of resources into a reason to work harder. Every day after school, the children returned to practise, rain or shine. Then came the 2026 Piala Tan Hooi Song National Primary Schools 24 Festive Drums Invitational. Against established teams from across Malaysia, Hwa Lian 1 stunned the field, capturing the Overall Championship and three Special Awards. That night, parents gathered at the jetty to welcome their young champions home. They came from a little island with little to spare, they left the national stage with a very big victory. And their name became the first engraved on the Piala Tan Hooi Song Trophy.

#一位华南师范大学学生的初次看鼓评论：昨晚观看潮州鼓乐文化表演，整场演出气势磅礴，氛围感十足！和基鹏一样，最令我触动的节目也是马来西亚巷梓敲击乐团《南洋鼓韵》。因为这个节目不仅是传统的阵式击鼓，还融入剧情演绎，搭配特色面具，戏剧张力拉满，快慢交错的鼓点像讲故事一样，给我们带来视觉与听觉的双重冲击。另外马来西亚鼓手剧场《鼓典》也让我印象深刻，鼓声厚重有力，节奏丰富！ 这场表演让我感悟很深。传统文化可以通过戏剧化、多元化的舞台形式创新传承。海外侨胞以鼓为载体，把漂泊、坚守、思乡全部融进表演，也让我更加懂得作为南粤青年，我们要主动挖掘、传播华侨文化，讲好海内外同根同源的家国故事
